Over the years at Surface 360, we have developed a close working relationship with Wetherspoon, who have commissioned us to renovate many of their pubs and/or hotels with our stunning porcelain tiling.
On this occasion, we headed up north to Kingston Upon Hull, East Yorkshire, to find out more about their latest property; The Admiral of the Humber. Focussing on their outside terrace space spanning approximately 400m² with a number of levels, the Surface 360 team managed to survey the site and make accurate product recommendations to provide the terrace with a durable and long-lasting structure.
To raise the new exterior floor to the right level required, we used our tall, height-adjustable pedestals to achieve a gain between 300mm – 450mm, while the pedestals’ self-levelling characteristic enabled the team to iron out any imperfections that occurred on the existing substrate.
To provide a minimalist finish, Wetherspoon opted for a two-tone stone-effect porcelain tile range called Levato Mono Legend 01 and 02. The Legend range is inspired by a selection of natural stone slabs containing variegated fossil traces, which offers a slight variation from tile to tile, and is available in a large 600mm x 600mm square format.
Both levels of the terrace utilised the Legend 20mm porcelain tile range, along with the staircase that linked the two areas. Due to the exceedingly deep voids of 300mm – 450mm below each porcelain tile, all paving tiles were specified with Impact Control Membrane (ICM) to provide peace of mind. Our ICM is the only patented system able to pass the Dynamic Loading Test for ‘Hard Object Impact’ with reference to UNI EN 12825:2003 norm.
At Surface 360, we recommend using ICM on all 20mm porcelain paving tiles when voids exceed 100mm. Although the porcelain tiles are extremely strong in terms of load bearing, like many materials it is prone to damage by high impact, therefore specifying ICM will prevent serious injury to a person if a paving tile happened to fail.
For those grim days where the weather is poor, the Legend range boasts a R11 (A, B and C) Classification for its surface slip resistance, which is a high rating on the UK recognised scale, providing Wetherspoon foot traffic with safety-under-foot in slippery conditions.
Overall the project was a success. Now in use, the terrace has been fit out with various pieces of beautiful furniture to provide a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere. The Surface 360 team managed to deliver all of their products to site and complete the floor installation in only 8 days!
